The Opportunity

At insitro, we are combining human biology at scale and machine learning to discover and develop new therapeutics. The heart of our strategy is to produce large data sets that will drive machine learning and yield key biological insights. This strategy requires a seamless, robust, and effective operation that simultaneously spans internal and partnered projects.


Reporting to the Head of Financials Operations, we are seeking a purchasing professional that is experienced in procurement for high-throughput biology operations, collaborative and versatile to join our growing team.  As the first hire in this role, you will be accountable for all purchasing activities, including and not limited to: setting the strategy, implementing procedures and executing purchases, inventory management, procurement planning, and management of vendor relationships.  Further, you will play a key role to support procurement, planning, and inventory processes in an ERP.  The successful candidate will partner with the High-throughput Biology, Data Science and Accounting & Finance Teams and will work cross-functionally with our scientists, engineers, and operational colleagues to build the “best in class” purchasing processes and procedures to support our rapid company growth.  


Your primary duties will be:

  • Develop, document, and communicate the procurement strategy, operational procedures and policies 
  • Manage all purchase order tracking 
  • Manage all supplier relationships, negotiate prices and discounts
  • Understand colleagues’ procurement needs, assist with forecast planning, purchasing efforts for consumables, reagents, and capital equipment
  • Partner with Finance to ensure long and short range purchases are reflected in the annual budget, forecasting and long-range planning process
  • Support analysis of external services: build vs. buy
  • Contribute to material tracking and reporting solutions across multiple lab environment
  • Assist with ERP design and system implementation requirements, workflow design, user acceptance testing, training, go-live execution, ongoing system maintenance for procurement, inventory management and inventory planning
  • Support RF Smart warehouse management system for bar coding, scanning and receiving of inventory items
  • Manage laboratory fixed asset physical tracking 
  • Manage and collaborate with Finance and Lab Ops for ERP item master setup, catalogs and addition of new items
  • Develop metrics and reporting tools to measure and track results 
  • Partner with Accounting Team on close process and audit preparation  
  • When applicable, hire and mentor a team to support company growth
  • Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned

About You

  • Bachelor degree in Business, Finance, Science or related field  
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience in procurement for a life science, biotech and high-throughput biology operations
  • Proven track record in managing a complex set of purchase requirements across multiple vendors
  • Analytical thinker with vision to scale procurement needs
  • Experience in negotiating pricing, contracts terms and conditions
  • Experience developing and measuring key performance indicators
  • Working knowledge of financial analysis
  • Purchasing, Inventory Management and Inventory Planning ERP system design and implementation experience, preferably in Oracle Cloud or similar
  • Organized and strong attention to detail with an ability to simultaneously research discrepancies and solve problems
  • Excellent communicator with good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional leaders and others in the company
  • Ability to work independently with general direction and guidance
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask in an ever changing environment
  • Proficient Excel skills and ability to work in G-Suite
  • Passion for making a difference in the world


Nice to Have

  • Experience managing material safety data sheet
  • Experience with inventory management at project level
  • Familiarity with stockroom management  
  • Familiarity with GMP and other regulatory requirements around appropriate processes and procedures to ensure future compliance
  • Familiarity with internal controls and segregation of duties
